Nudibranchs vs. NHL

Well--I just have to say I think Nathan's blog demonstrates something clearly about our friends. Despite the provocative scuba pictures, and the titulating use of the word Nudibranchs, our friends really care much more about the status of the hockey playoffs than just about anything else.

While there is a surprising amount of local recreational hockey in Perth. Nathan can play Sunday, Monday, and Thursday nights easy.( of course you are always popular if you are a goalie), we have had an amazing deficit of NHL.

Nathan has to satisfy himself with the checking stats and game synopses nightly, and then trying to draw a hockey conversation out of me by quoting various numbers and rankings. Unfortunately, I tend to be more interested in watching the game than comparing save percentages and line ups. (oh, really...uh huh, 37%, wow, you don't say...)

We are contemplating the devilishly expensive cable options (which still only show one or two games a week) but so far have delayed because of the endless contracts and cancellation clauses. In the meantime, its clear you hockey friends are the folks who will respond to Nathan's dire need: swapping endless statistics, creating a virtual hockey bar (the replacement Buffalo Wild Wings where we spent every play off game while living in Rochester), and the trash-talking/side-betting hockey mates who are his link to play-off excitement.

Thanks for being there on the important issues. Kristin

p.s. Nikki--while I'll never give up hope on the Devils, I'm letting the Wild be my long-shot hope!

There are no local watering holes that air NHL games, even on the small b&w television in the back next to the restroom? Is it all soccer and rugby down there?

There must be an Aussie or Kiwi playing in the NHL somewhere, right?

You should really google the word "Sopcast" and discover the slightly murky legal area that is online streaming of sports events :-)

Actually its all Australian Rules Football League here. The playoffs coincide with the start of the AFL--which dominates all sports coverage.

If you can figure out Geth's Sopcast thing, you can probably watch 40-50 hours of games, pre-game show, post-game show, weekly betting show, and the evening SportCenter wannabe is about 60% AFL (and off field drinking, fighting, incidents).

We've got the Setanta channels on Sky - so we get NHL hockey and AFL Aussie Rules.

Our Melbourne friends have insisted that we became St Kilda fans and the Saturday night AFL game is on 9am Saturday morning here so we've probably been watching the same games you have.

By the way - Yahoo Sports are showing some NHL games streamed. You have to be in North America but you should be able to "proxy" around that

"Nudibranch" looks a lot less sexy when you read the Wikipedia entry. I've never fantasized about "opisthobranch gastropod mollusks". But that's just me. Shrug.

I will say I miss the days when the lower-tier cable sports stations would show an AFL game of the week here in the U.S. I got hooked pretty good. It seemed like the love child of my two favorite sports, hockey and soccer...still does, actually.

Go Pens! Go Wild! Go away, Stars!
